World Statistics

By the year 2010, an average of 2,853.88 people will become HIV positive every minute of every hour of every day.

Over 22 million people have died from AIDS.

Over 42 million people are living with HIV/AIDS.

Over 19 million women are living with HIV/AIDS.

By the year 2010, five countries (Ethopia, Nigeria, China, India and Russia) with 40 percent of the world's population will add 50 to 75 million infected people to the worldwide pool of HIV Disease.

Currently, there are 14,000 new infections every day. HIV/AIDS is a disease of young people with half of the 5 million new infections each year occuring among people ages 15 to 24.

The UN estimates that, currently there are 14 million AIDS orphans and that by 2010 there will be 25 million.

In 2001 South Africa had 1.5 million orphans with 660,000 orphaned because of AIDS. In 2005 there was an estimated 2 million orphans with 1.3 million losing their parents to AIDS. In 2010 it is projected there will be 2.3 million orphans with 1.7 million orphaned because of AIDS. This is in South Africa alone.

Total orphans in all of Africa in 2010 will be almost 42 million. Of these, 20 million will be AIDS orphans.

AIDS Orphan Definition: Children aged 0-14, who have lost one or both parents to AIDS.
